About

The Africa SLCP Project aims to contribute to the reduction of short-lived climate pollutants in Africa, ultimately supporting the achievement of the goals outlined in the Paris Agreement. This project seeks to establish Africa’s leadership in actionable science by bringing together key stakeholders in Africa for climate modeling and short-lived climate pollutants research. The project builds upon the findings of the Kenya SLCP Project.

Short-lived climate pollutants – black carbon (BC), methane (CH4), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and tropospheric ozone (O3) – have a great global warming potential and are associated with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases (UNEP, 2022; MoH, 2021)). The African continent is endowed with a rich diversity tree species – a key source of biomass fuels – and ever-growing human population. As the population increases, so does the demand for biomass fuel, incomplete combustion of which contributes to high concentrations of these super pollutants in the atmosphere.

Africa SLCP Project, at this moment, is imperative to improve indoor air quality and mitigate climate change impacts. In line with Paris Agreement goals, the project seeks to assess the effect of black carbon and PM2.5; examine the opportunities for gender mainstreaming; evaluate Africa’s legislative landscape on SLCPs; map household indoor air quality; and strengthen the role of sub-national entities in reducing SLCPs.

The project team will collaborate with Kenya Meteorological Society (amongst other civil society organizations), government agencies and private consultants across Africa to execute the project objectives. Ultimately, the project aims to increase awareness, especially amongst the vulnerable grass-root communities, and thus prompt social and behavioral change towards eco-friendly and sustainable development.

Achievement of the project objectives will inform climate policies and ultimately contribute towards improvement of Nationally Determined Contributions of African countries, pledged under the Paris Agreement.

Further, the project addresses aspects of five sustainable development goals: the third (good health and well-being); seventh (clean energy); eleventh (sustainable cities and communities); twelfth (responsible consumption and production); and thirteenth (climate action).
